STEM included in continuing ed or PGP for renewal
As per RCW 28A.410.221 beginning September 1, 2014 continuing education or professional growth plans for teachers at the elementary and secondary levels in STEM-related subjects must include a specific focus on the integration of science, mathematics, technology, and engineering instruction 2. This requirement is for all continuing and professional certificate holders.
Beginning in 2019, renewal applications for professional and continuing teacher certificates must document completion of at least 15 clock hours, or at least one goal from an annual professional growth plan (PGP), with an emphasis on STEM integration to meet this renewal requirement. STEM integration is the authentic combination of at least two of the STEM components (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).
The requirement applies to the following endorsements:
Elementary Education (K-8) endorsement
Early Childhood Education (P-3) endorsement
Middle Level Math (4-9)
Middle Level Science (4-9)
Designated Sciences (5-12): Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Space Science, Physics

RCW 28A.410.278 Beginning September 1, 2016, the professional educator standards board shall incorporate in-service training or continuing education on the revised teacher and principal evaluation systems under RCW 28A.405.100 as a requirement for renewal of continuing or professional level certificates, including requiring knowledge and competencies in teacher and principal evaluation systems as an aspect of professional growth plans used for certificate renewal.
Beginning July 1, 2015 all continuing and professional certificates for educational staff associates will include a requirement for suicide prevention training for renewal per RCW 28A.410.226.
This section applies to the following certificates if the certificate is first issued or is renewed on or after July 1, 2015:
Continuing certificates for school nurses;
Continuing certificates for school social workers;
Continuing and professional certificates for school psychologists; and
Continuing and professional certificates for school counselors
