    Shortage Areas

The Professional Educator Standards Board designates official personnel shortage areas based on periodic analysis of educator supply and demand in Washington. This information is used in determining eligibility for deferment of certain federal loans and eligibility for certain tuition waivers at Washington public institutions. For those purposes, between now and June 30, 2014, the areas listed below are considered to be in shortage. (Note: The state has not currently defined any geographic shortage areas.)

Individuals who believe they may qualify for federal loan deferment are encouraged to contact the U.S. Department of Education for detailed information. Individuals seeking a state tuition waiver should contact the institution at which the course will be taken. The Standards Board is unable to offer any information beyond the listing on this page.
